15 | We Shall See

“I have returned with my mates!”

As Crag shifted back and made his announcement, Hardy and the others also shifted. Well after night had fallen, although it was only perhaps eight or nine in the evening, the courtyard held few other people. The SUVs carrying their luggage had already arrived, and Trick was busy directing the staff where they needed to take them. A lone figure had been approaching from the steps leading up to the massive doorway leading into the castle proper, but at Crag’s words, the man had come to a stop.

Hardy almost laughed at the exasperation that crossed the steward’s face, but he schooled his countenance to his normal, scowling ‘resting beta face’ as he planted himself behind Crag and Winter, the later of whom was busy gawking at the imposing castle before him.

Wolfholm Castle was enormous, a sprawling complex that consisted of more than eight-hundred rooms in the main castle, not even including the separate barracks, staff housing, temple, garage, armory, and other administrative buildings that were arranged around the main courtyard. Then, of course, there were the underground levels that Winter couldn’t see, which included the amphitheater and challenge arena, dungeons, food stores, and other chambers best left secret.

Alas, with Crag’s proclamation still ringing through the air, loud enough to carry throughout the castle — even without the enhanced hearing of the Breed — it was not long before the nearly empty courtyard began to fill. A large crowd gathered, including those alphas who had yet to return to their respective territories following the Longnight or Christmas holidays. At first, the buzz of voices was low and sporadic, but as people caught sight of the fair-skinned, muscular omega standing beside their king — and the faintly glowing, circular tattoo gracing Winter's flat abdomen — there were more than a few gasps of shock.

“Welcome home, sir,” Gerard, the craggy-faced and grey-haired steward, greeted with his clipped, rough voice. The big, gruff beta ran his sharp gaze over the group around Crag, his eyes pausing momentarily on the marks covering Winter’s neck, but it was the equally visible marks on Hardy’s neck that had the man’s eyes widening before he visibly regained control of himself. For a moment, a flash of a grin twisted the man’s lips and a twinkle appeared in his dark eyes, before he schooled his features back into a suitably neutral expression. “Your wing has been prepared for you and your mates, as per your instructions. Last meal should be waiting for you. If you,” he paused, once more flicking his twinkling eyes between Winter and Hardy before continuing, “Or your mates need anything, please inform the chamberlain so we can get it taken care of.”

“Gerard,” Crag said, his voice still pitched to carry, “Please see to it that we are not bothered this evening, unless someone is dying, dead, or wishes to be dead. I need to get my mates settled before dealing with any affairs of state. They can all wait until tomorrow.
